TMG Press Release
September 2, 2021

Arlington, VA – TMG and APTelecom were selected by the World Bank to carry out a project intended to facilitate investment in improved broadband infrastructure in the Horn of Africa region. The firms are evaluating current submarine and terrestrial broadband infrastructure, identifying infrastructure and investment gaps, proposing solutions, and recommending regulatory approaches to advancing broadband market development in the region.

Over the course of the Broadband Missing Links and Regional Market Enabling Environment for the Horn of Africa Region project, TMG and APTelecom are reviewing existing and planned fiber-optic cable routes, analyzing market structures, conducting infrastructure needs assessments, assessing wholesale provider interest, identifying public and private financing needs, and providing recommendations for addressing regulatory bottlenecks. The project is particularly focused on Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan, but also takes into account connections with neighboring countries.

As a key input, TMG and APTelecom are engaging with key public-sector and private-sector stakeholders in order to ensure a robust understanding of the current broadband infrastructure and market situations in each of the key countries. The outputs of the project are intended to assist the World Bank in its assessment of appropriate paths to encouraging funding of broadband infrastructure projects and crowding-in of private investments to improve broadband connectivity and reliability in the Horn of Africa region.
